Privacy Policy

Draft, pending review by counsel. Not yet in effect. Words in [brackets] will be filled in when the company is formed. Questions: support@taxtirement.com.

Effective date: [date]

Taxtirement is published by [LLC name] ("we", "us"). This policy explains what happens to your information when you use the Taxtirement app on iPhone, iPad and Mac.

The short version

  • We don't collect your data. There's no account, no sign-up, no analytics and no advertising.
  • Taxtirement has no server, and the app itself has no network code (purchases are handled by Apple). Nothing in your plan is sent to us.
  • Your plan stays on your devices and, if you use iCloud, in your own iCloud Drive.
  • The tax return import reads your Form 1040 on your device, keeps only the numbers you confirm, and never uses or saves your name or Social Security number.
  • We see something only if you choose to send it to us, for example by emailing a question.

What the app stores, and where

Your plan. The household details, accounts, income and assumptions you enter are saved in a plan file. Like any document, it's saved on your device or in your iCloud Drive. iCloud storage is provided by Apple under Apple's terms and privacy policy, and we can't access it. If you share a plan with your spouse through iCloud, Apple handles the sharing between your two Apple accounts.

Settings. A few preferences, such as whether you've accepted the first-run notice, whether reminders are on and whether the app lock is on, are stored on your device.

The widget. If you add the Taxtirement widget, the app saves a small summary of this year's numbers where the widget can read it, on the same device. So the widget can show it on the lock screen, this summary can be read while the device is locked (once it has been unlocked after starting up).

How your plan is protected

  • iPhone and iPad. Plan files the app saves on the device are encrypted by iOS with a key tied to your device passcode; after the device restarts, they can't be read until it's first unlocked. The app lock (on by default) also asks for Face ID or your passcode each time the app opens.
  • Mac. The Mac protects files with FileVault, which encrypts the whole disk. Turn it on in System Settings › Privacy & Security.
  • iCloud. Apple encrypts iCloud Drive. If you turn on Advanced Data Protection for your Apple Account, it's end-to-end encrypted, so only your trusted devices can read it (about Advanced Data Protection).
  • App lock. You can choose to require Face ID, Touch ID or your device passcode (or your Mac's password) to open Taxtirement. This is checked by Apple's system on your device; the app never sees your face, fingerprint or passcode. The lock covers your plans when you leave the app, including in the app switcher. It doesn't hide the widget.

Reminders. If you turn on checklist reminders, they're scheduled as local notifications on your device. Nothing is sent to us.

Importing a tax return

When you import a photo, scan or PDF of your Form 1040:

  • the text is recognized on your device using Apple's built-in text recognition;
  • the app reads only the income, deduction and tax lines it needs, plus the filing status;
  • names, addresses and Social Security numbers on the form are ignored: they're never used or saved;
  • the image isn't kept: once you confirm the numbers, only those numbers are saved in your plan.

What we collect

We don't collect personal or financial information through the app. The app has no analytics, tracking or advertising software, it has no network code, and it doesn't send your plan anywhere.

Purchases. Subscriptions are handled by Apple through the App Store. Apple tells us about sales in aggregate and doesn't share your name, email or payment details with us.

Crash reports. If you agree to share analytics with app developers in your device's settings, Apple may send us crash reports. These describe the app's state when it crashed and don't include your plan's contents.

If you contact us. If you email us, for example with "Report a number", which drafts an email containing a calculation from your plan, we receive whatever the email contains. We use it only to answer you and to fix the app, and we don't share it. You can edit the email before sending it, or not send it.

The app may link to other websites, such as ssa.gov for your Social Security statement. Those sites have their own privacy practices.

Children

Taxtirement is meant for adults planning retirement. It isn't directed to children, and we don't knowingly collect information from anyone.

Deleting your data

Delete the plan file, like any document, and delete the app. Because we don't hold a copy, there's nothing for us to delete. For anything you've emailed us, ask and we'll delete it.

Changes

If this policy changes, we'll update the effective date above, and we'll note material changes in the app's release notes.

This website

(Added for the website; part of the draft for counsel.)

taxtirement.com is a set of plain web pages. It sets no cookies, runs no scripts, and has no analytics, advertising, fonts or other content from third parties, and no forms.

Like any website host, our host (Cloudflare) processes your IP address and basic request details to deliver pages and protect against attacks, and may keep them briefly in server logs. We don't use them to identify or track you.

If you email us, we receive what you send, and use it only to answer you and improve the app.
